Film Review: Last Christmas

So I can’t lie, when I heard the title of this film and then watched the trailer, I assumed it would be the cliche Christmas-themed romcom. You know, man meets woman in some sort of awkward or amusing circumstances, they develop a love-hate relationship or just can’t get it right and then finally get together and live happily ever after.

But I was pleasantly surprised, after an interesting twist, it turned out to be really good.

The film follows a young woman, Kate and her many mishaps, after having a major transplant the previous Christmas, she has been struggling to re-adjust to life as she feels like things are different. She meets Tom, who despite how mean she is to him at times, still comes around and encourages her to appreciate & enjoy life, live a better life and most importantly, to always look up.

They establish an unexpected connection where he seems to always appear at just the right time, and he becomes an important part of her life and she slowly becomes a better person.

There is one majorly tear-jerking scene so definitely take some tissues with you if you decide to watch this one!

My only criticism of this film is the casting of British actress Emma Thompson, who played Kate’s mother and put on a Yugoslavian accent. I feel like they could’ve found an actual Yugoslavian actress, as it wouldn’t have seemed so odd but perhaps they wanted a big name actress to draw viewers in, and in a way her accent made the things she said funnier.

Overall, I would give this film an 8 out of 10.
