5 Books to Read during Covid-19 Quarantine

This list is not in any particular order, I just wrote down the titles as they came to mind. I’m gonna try to recommend a variety of book topics and genres, from different authors.

“Cheaters” by a Eric Jerome Dickey.

Although this book was published in 1999, I feel like this is actually quite a timeless book. I say this because the issues/stories told in this book are still quite prevalent in 2020. As the title suggests, it’s about Cheaters but not necessarily in the way we’d think of.

Without giving too much away, we follow the lives of a few main characters, from two groups of friends who’s lives end up intertwining – a man who’s struggled to remain faithful in past relationships but falls hard for a woman who’s slightly jaded from her past experiences; a man who is haunted by the ghosts of his player past, and a man who is unhappy in his marriage and has his head turned when he meets a woman who actually listens to him.

We follow their journeys both separately and together, as they try to do the right thing but don’t always get it right.

This book is available on Amazon as paperback, hardcover and Kindle

The “Gossip Girl” series by Cecily Von Ziegesar.

You might think that this book series is for children but it’s actually classed as young adult novels. This series of books was my obsession when I was about 15/16, I think I was fascinated by the idea that a bunch of rich kids lived in this world of freedom and lavishness.

The main series consists of 14 book, following the lives of the main characters and their friends and family at different points throughout their teenage years. The main characters are frenemies, Blair and Serena, their shared love interest, Nate; Dan a guy that Serena date briefly, Dan’s sister Jenny and his best friend Vanessa.

If you watched the tv series, you’ll be familiar with these characters but I promise you, the books are much better and as someone who read some of the books before watching the show, I was a bit disappointed with the many changes that were mad to the series when it was adapted. To be honest, only very few episodes from the 6 seasons of the tv show were actually based on the books so I kind of feel like you need to have read the books and watched the show to fully enjoy the whole thing.

All of the books are available on Amazon in Kindle and Audiobook format, as well as some paperback and hardcovers. The tv series is available on Netflix.

“The Defining Decade” by Meg Jay

Written by a clinical psychologist, this book is pretty much the kick up the ass that a lot of people in their 20’s need.

The book tells us that our 20’s is actually the most important decade of our lives, because we make the most life-changing/determining decisions in this decade, and we should stop wasting it thinking we’ve got all the time in the world.

She uses relatable stories from sessions with clients to give insight into how to utilise time correctly, encouraging readers to stop coasting and make firm decisions on what their path in life will be.

Covering all aspects of life – education, work, relationships/dating, how to utilise the people in our lives and the skills we have.

At a time like this, this book is perfect for those of us who may not be so sure of what we are doing and we have this undetermined amount of free time to try to figure that out.

I’d even recommend it to people who are not in their 20s as the principles and ideas from this book can still be applied.

The book is available on Amazon in Kindle and audiobook format, as well as paperback and hardcover but these are drastically more expensive than the digital versions.

“Cravings” by Chrissy Teigen

If like me, you love to cook, this is a good book for you. Filled with a variation of recipes, influenced by different people in her life, some of her own original recipes, as well as some that she’s adapted to her own tastes.

There’s still a lot of recipes that I want to try from this book but so far I’ve perfected (yes, I said perfected) the Honey Butter Chicken. This is definitely a really delicious recipe as long as you get it right, and can be done with all the different parts, whether that’s wings, strips or thighs and drumsticks.

This book is available on Amazon in Kindle and hardcover.

This last recommendation is very close to my heart as it’s the first book I compelled.

“Good Girlz in the Hood” follows the life of protagonist, Ciara Clarke, from the age of 16 into adulthood. I wrote about the many trials and tribulations she faced in her relationships with friends, family and romantic relationships.

She definitely goes through a lot, in the 93 chapters of this book but it’s definitely worth reading, if I do say so myself. It’s ultimately of a girl trying find herself and survive everything that she is going through.

Don’t judge it too harshly, I was 16 when I started writing this, so the first few chapters a bit shaky but it definitely gets better as it progresses!

This book can be found on Wattpad, which can be used on desktop and as an app. – https://my.w.tt/PhqB3zuYu5

  1. I love the Gossip Girl series on TV, although I am yet to read the books. I agree with the classification for Gossip Girl- I’ve re-watched it since I first watched it when I was 16 (around 4 years ago) and there are some very adult themes which I think can appeal to all ages! Great post 🙂
